Job Vacancy for the position of a Social Science Research Assistant

Background:
Coastal Oceans Research and Development – Indian Ocean (CORDIO) East Africa is a non-profit research
organization, registered in Kenya (No. 101783), with a network of projects, collaborators and partners that
extends across the Western Indian Ocean. The organisation specialises in generating knowledge to find
solutions that benefit marine ecosystems and people.

CORDIO is recruiting a Social Science Research Assistant to be based in Mombasa, but with the requirement
to travel. S/he will provide technical expertise to socio-economic aspects of different projects, leading to
the achievement of socio-economic and other community-based natural resource management (CBNRM)
outcomes.

In order to qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Technical skills:
• A BSc degree in Sociology, Anthropology, Community Development, Psychology, Economics, or any
related subject area.
• One year of experience in social science research and/or implementation of socially-oriented
projects within the marine environment. Through this, the candidate will be able to demonstrate:
o Knowledge of and experience using social science methods, tools and analysis
o Understanding and familiarity with socio-economic issues within the marine, fisheries and
coastal environment.
o Field research experience and design
o Basic experience conducting literature reviews, qualitative and quantitative data
collection, management, analysis and writing.
o Demonstrated experience in leading and /or implementing social research projects,
particularly involving interviews and focus group discussions
o Ability to lead and/or support trainings.
• Fluency in oral and written Swahili

Management and inter-personal skills
• Self-motivated with strong interpersonal and effective communication skills.
• Ability to maintain trust and confidentiality.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Implementation
• Willingness to work extended hours and/or in strenuous field and rural conditions.
• Attention to detail and good organizational skills.
• Good oral and written knowledge of English and Swahili.
• Strong proficiency to use a computer and necessary software including Microsoft Word,
PowerPoint, Excel etc.
• Kenyan national.
